A scary traffic accident in Times Square in NYC resulted in at least one death and injuries to numerous pedestrians. Moreover, the driver reportedly has a history of drunk driving arrests.
The fatal accident occurred around 12:00 p.m., a time when many office workers in Manhattan are heading outside for their lunch hour. As a result, Times Square, a popular tourist location which is typically packed with people on sidewalks, had even more pedestrians than usual.
The motorist, a 26-year-old Bronx NY resident, was reportedly traveling northbound on 7th Avenue, near the intersection with West 43rd Street and in the heart of Times Square. Some witnesses to the crash later spoke to the media and said that the vehicle appeared to be driving at an excessive speed, perhaps as fast as 80 mph, moments before crashing into the pedestrians.
According to law enforcement officials, the driver lost control of his car when he passed 43rd Street, hopped a curb, and struck numerous people on the sidewalk before finally coming to a stop on 45th Street. Images published by some media outlets show the upended motor vehicle, a maroon-colored sedan, next to a bent traffic pole.
Early reports stated that one person died and 12 people sustained injuries in the frightening car accident. However, the injury figures have risen in the hours following the crash: authorities now state that at least 19 people were injured as a result of the Times Square pedestrian accident.
Fire officials treated the accident victims at the scene and took many of them to local hospitals for additional treatment. Meanwhile, law enforcement placed the suspect under arrest. It has been reported that the driver may have attempted to flee the scene on foot before he was apprehended and taken into police custody.
Initial Reports: Driver in Times Square Accident Has History of DWI Arrests
At this time, there is no indication that the motorist was intoxicated at the time of the NYC Times Square crash. However, the motorist is reportedly being tested for the presence of alcohol or drugs in his bloodstream. Depending on the results of any blood tests, the driver could be subject to very serious criminal charges. Beyond that, he could face multiple personal injury lawsuits, including a wrongful death lawsuit.
It has been reported by New York City Police Department (NYPD) officials that the driver of the vehicle involved in the Times Square auto accident has multiple DWI/DUI arrests and traffic citations on his driving record. Those details have not been confirmed, but a DUI record could be a factor in any criminal charges and penalties that stem from this fatal accident.
Preliminary Investigation: Times Square Car Crash Likely Accidental
The NYPD and the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) are actively investigating the accident and probing the possible causes. The results of the preliminary investigation indicate that the crash may have been accidental.
The Times Square accident initially caused a frenzy among residents and workers who worried that it could be an act of terrorism. However, the early findings of law enforcement investigators are that there is no connection to terror; rather, say NYPD officials, the accident was likely accidental.
